With the start of the season quickly approaching, the boys varsity basketball team gets ready to face the season with a new approach that they think will work just as well. The new approach involves a slow start and building up momentum. This is because of the fact that only two athletes from the team have varsity experience. So the boys are looking to not let the loss of last years seniors heavily affect the teams dynamics.
“I think its going to really be a process where we hopefully are going to be playing our best basketball by February but to start out the year, we’re going to be young and we’re gonna have guys that are somewhat inexperienced,” coach Mark Wright said. “We’re going to have to have some guys going through those first couple months and gaining experience. Our expectation is that we can be a good team and we can compete in our conference once we get toward the end of the year.”
Last season, the team met most of their goals. Not only did the team go 17-11, they also won their conference and won the Seckman Tournament. However, the changes in the players could put that up in the air, since there are few returning players and there are more point guard sized people than any other position.
“We lost a lot of talent last year,” junior player Chase Powelson said.“We lost James and Terry and Josh and a lot of other good players.”
The athletes remain optimistic in the face of these issues though. The team is preparing to make changes to their strategies and put forth the effort to be ready to turn the tables toward the end of the season and be ready for conference.
“Our height might hold us back due to physical attributes to everyone. So we’ll play dribble drive which will allow our guards to attack more and allow our only center to score more easily,” senior player Gabe Grote said. “So far we are pretty high in confidence. Coach has been telling us that compared to last year we seem a lot more ahead of the game and more ready.”
