As spring rolls in, the Drama Club is preparing for their second play of the year. The spring play will be “Anything Goes”. Unlike the fall play “Bad Seed”, this will be a musical, so Kim Sulzner, the drama teacher, will be collaborating with Lorraine Smith, the choir teacher. The musical will be in the auditorium April 9 through 11 at 7 p.m.
“The new set is something really cool. It’s supposed to be fifteen feet big. It seems ridiculous.” senior Ryan Hyde said.
Anything Goes is a traditional musical, considered to be a comedy show just shy of 2 hours long. Tickets are normally $5, but due to increased set cost, tickets will be $10 this time around. Sulzner expects that the show will be sold out all three nights. Cast members are nervous as well as excited about the upcoming musical.
“I am really really excited because before they announced it, I had never heard of Anything Goes and it’s just a really different show and there is so much dancing in it,” senior Maya Kelch said. “We have a really really good cast, everyone is extremely talented so I’m just really excited for the outcome.”
The Drama club has been preparing for the musical for weeks, building sets, auditioning, and rehearsing. The set includes a rotating turntable that changes the set without a crew needing to move furniture or backdrops. It’s a series of platforms that start off pretty tall and then step down because we have a lot of dancers. Then we’re building an eight foot revolving turntable that will be fifteen feet tall and revolve to change scenes.
In addition to an intricate set, this musical includes a large cast of actors, singers and dancers.
“I think they’re excited, I didn’t hear any grumblings or complaints when I published the cast yesterday, and that’s always a good thing,” Sulzner said. “I think they were excited when they saw who all was playing the parts.”
