On Tuesday, February 17, the boys basketball team faced Fort Zumwalt West and lost with a final score of 35-40.
“I was thinking we need to beat them,” senior forward Calvin Wellmaker said. “We just took a loss against howell and we were on a five game losing streak we need a win.”
Our teams five starters included Derrick Scarbrough, Calvin Wellmaker, Corey Willis, Gabe Grote and Elliot Montgomery. The Knights were behind during most of the beginning of the game. The first quarter ended while the Knights were losing 4-10.
“We’re used to that now, its probably not something we should be used to,” senior guard Gabe Grote said. “We just have to work on fighting at the beginning and fighting the whole game”
With 5 minutes and 45 seconds left in the second quarter things looked even worse when FZW scored a three-point shot to make the score 7-18. However, after this things seemed to take a turn when junior Chase Powelson hit a free throw and Grote hit a three-point shot. The half ended with the Knights down 17-20.
”We had a rough start coming out,” Wellmaker said “We really needed to box out and we couldn’t hit shots. Then towards the middle we started to come back and then we took the lead but then we just couldn’t finish. We were off.”
The two teams stayed within four points of each other until the last minute of the game, when FZW finished the game with a free throw that brought the score to the final 35-40.
“The hole we dug ourselves into in the beginning made it really hard for us to come back and we get tired trying to fight back the whole time,” Grote said
The boys are expecting to learn from this game, so they can come out stronger and stay strong.
“I don’t think anything held us back except our minds. We just didn’t come out strong enough,” guard senior Corey Willis said.
