It was the first time we met the ignorant, insensitive yet lovable boss. It was the first time It was the first time we show Jim’s lack of care for his job
and his pranky persona. It was the first time we saw the connection between Jim and Pam that was only severed because of Roy. It was March 24, 2005. The day that NBC’s The Office (U.S.) first aired on television.
Today marks 10 years since this moment. The Office brought the mockumentary genre to the mainstream and has become a staple in pop culture. It paved the way for shows like Modern Family and Parks and Recreation to become popular with audiences. Arrested Development may have done the mockumentary style first but The Office brought the mostly foreign genre to audiences at home.
My first experience watching was actually the premiere of season 6. Gossip. I always remember the impression it left on me. I was astounded how so many characters have such strong traits which make them so realistic. With around 15 characters in the office at one time and only 22 minutes each episode to capture all of crazy yet real antics the co-workers get into, it’s amazing how there is so much life with those characters. This episode really showed the connection between them in such an intricate way as Michael spread multiple rumors about his subordinates to cover up the one true rumor that he accidentally let slip (With my personal favorite being that there is another person inside Kevin working him with controls).
Junior Kevin Fields first watched The Office when he was 13 in Colorado. Although he didn’t watch the pilot when it debuted, he went back to start the show from the beginning. The show grabbed his attention and it was placed on top of his list for favorite shows of all time.
“The first episode left a good impression because it was really good,” Fields said. “I didn’t dislike any of them so I kept watching.”
So if you are you are tired of watching reruns after reruns of Friends or need another Parks and Recreation after its season finale last month, come celebrate this decade old show and start the show from the very first episode. You will be hooked.
