A freshman going into high school has almost no idea what to expect. Being in a brand new building with brand new teachers and peers can be overwhelming for some. That’s where the FHN mentors come in.
“I like being a mentor because I like getting to know the kids so they feel like they have someone older there to help them if they need it,” junior Abby Day said,
The mentors are a group of juniors and seniors who go into freshman homerooms with activities and food to help them get acclimated to the school.
“My mentor helped me figure out my way around school, and she really made me feel more comfortable with the transition,” sophomore and potential mentor Audrey Baker said. “I hope to help make the transition easier for my freshman as well next year.”
Mentors usually have activities and lessons to help the students not only understand the school better, but to help them understand the direction they want to go in high school.
“The mentors put in a lot of work to help ensure our ninth graders transition easily to North,” said Stephanie Johnson, the sponsor of the mentors. “Strong relationships are built between our mentors and ninth graders that make a huge impact on all parties involved.”
The applications for becoming a mentor next year are due April 17 to Mrs. Johnson. They can be found in the Commons.
“Being a mentor has many positive attributes including building strong leadership skills and making new friends within the FHN community,” said Johnson. “Any ounce of encouragement and support they can provide our 9th graders will reap many benefits.”
