*The Francis Howell North High School journalism staffreturned from their spring National High School Journalism Convention that was April 16-19 in Denver.
The staff did some site seeing, attended learning sessions, competed in competitions and brought home a few awards.
North Star newsmagazine Editor-in-Chief Daniel Boddenbrought back the group’s highest honor. In February, Bodden was named the Missouri State High School Journalist of the Year. Bodden’s portfolio moved on to the national competition where he was named one of six runners-up for National Journalist of the Year. He was honored with a certificate and $850 scholarship.
“Daniel is a great individual and we couldn’t be happier for him and this accomplishment,” Director of Student Media Aaron Manfull said. “He has been a great leader in the FHN journalism program and his individual work has set a high bar for others to follow.”
Bodden’s award wasn’t the only one the staffs brought back. They were honored with a few other awards as well.
Staff members Kristina Forst, Alexis Tainter, Daniel Bodden and Jamie Hetlage entered the Journalism Quiz Bowl competition as a team at the convention. The group of four took the top spot and trophy that went with it, a first for the school.
Additionally, a few staffers were honored for their work in write-off competitions at the convention. Earning honorable mentions were Alex Weinstock in Sports Writing, Kristina Forst in Yearbook Layout: Theme and Ashleigh Jenkins in Photography Portfolio. Bring home Excellent rankings were Daniel Bodden in News Editing / Headline Writing and Amanda Eckhard in Newspaper Sports Photography.
As a whole, the staffs nabbed five places in different categories in the Best of Show competition for those schools that attended. In the Newspaper Special Edition category, the North Star placed fifth. The Excalibur yearbook and FHNtoday TV broadcast program brought home sixth place finishes in their respective categories. The North Star placed 9th in the newsmagazine category and bringing home the first place trophy in the Large School Website category was FHNtoday.com/FHNgameday.com.
The Excalibur yearbook was named a Pacemaker winner at the convention by the National Scholastic Press Association. This is the third consecutive year the book has been named a winner in this prestigious contest.
On a school level, Francis Howell North was honored on Thursday night as a First Amendment Press Freedom Award winner for the school’s commitment to First Amendment freedoms for the student press. North was one of seven schools recognized national for this. It’s the sixth straight year the school has earned this distinction.
“It was a great few days in Denver for the staffs,” Manfull said. “I think the students enjoyed seeing so much of their hard work pay off with some recognition and they all came back with new ideas they are excited about to help move the program forward.”
The program’s student editor-in-chiefs who oversee production of the media are: senior Daniel Bodden (North Star newspaper), senior Kristina Forst (Excalibur Yearbook), senior Jake Chiarelli (Digital Media) and senior Ashleigh Jenkins (Photography). The journalism program at FHN is led by Aaron Manfull and Jordyn Klackner. They oversee the 90 members on staff and 300 students who run through the program each year.
High school students at FHN can enroll in a variety of journalism courses. Beginning students can take Digital Photojournalism for Practical Arts credit. The Introductory Journalism class counts as a Communication Arts credit and next year there are plans to add a new introductory course, Broadcast Journalism, which will also count as a Communication Arts credit. Once students have had a prerequisite, they can join staff and enroll in a for-credit class, taking Newspaper Production, Newspaper Production Honors, Yearbook Production or Yearbook Production Honors. 4/22 Manfull |
