Day 1: Underoath’s “Tired Violence” Documentary Review
Underoath is a band that has inspired countless people throughout their 12 year lifespan. They sparked controversy by being a Christian metal band and also helped shape post hardcore as the genre it is today. In 2013, Underoath disbanded, but not before going on one last farewell tour. On May 2, the band released “Tired Violence”, a documentary showcasing this tour and how Underoath has affected each of the members.
“Tired Violence” is an excellent documentary. It’s powerful, emotional, and informational. I’m not normally a fan of documentaries, but this one felt different. The b-role is artistic (as expected by Underoath) and entertaining. The live footage is gripping even though there wasn’t any sound to it. The interviewees all seem thoroughly interested. This documentary would be all around fantastic even if I wasn’t a huge Underoath fan. Being a long time fan of the band made this very special though.
This film is full of interviews that answers questions many people have had since Underoath’s disbandment in 2013. They respond to why they decided to drop their title as a Christian band, they individually talk about their feelings about Underoath being over (This lead to one of the most emotional segments of the film), and they talked about their feelings toward each other.
Emotions run heavy throughout this documentary, but the one part that seems to have resonated with fans the most is near the end when Chris Dudley is talking for his interview part and has to take a break because he can’t stop crying. The camera stays on him the whole time he tries to regain his composure and it’s such a heartbreaking and intimate moment. It truly captures the effect the band has had on it’s members.
Not only does “Tired Violence” feature the band’s feelings and emotions, it also features other bands and people who were inspired by Underoath. It has members of letlive., MewithoutYou, and more discuss how big of an impact the band has had on them. This documentary perfectly captures how much of a sensation Underoath was and always will be.
Overall, “Tired Violence” is one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen. It’s a must-see for Underoath fans and I even suggest it to people who have never listened to them just to see the legacy they have left. To support the members and purchase the film, follow the link below.
