On Tuesday September 1, the varsity soccer team played their first home game of the season- a hard fought battle against CBC. The team lost by a score of one to zero, which, considering their opponent, was a pretty good result.
“We gave our best for 80 minutes, but we need to work on our game throughout the season to get better,” said team captain Chris Oswald.
FHN started the game with 4-3-3-1 formation, and were able to pressure the Cadets throughout the game. CBC however took the lead in the 27’ minute when rookie goalkeeper Fletcher Dietrich mishandled the ball and CBC capitalized. After that CBC kept up the pressure staying in the knights half of the field. It looked dire for the knights when CBC drew a penalty. But Dietrich made up for his earlier mistake by saving the first and second shots after the first was redone because of a foul.
“ Fletcher was excellent in goal, he really stepped up for us last night,” said Oswald.
After halftime the game became very physical with juniors Chase Droge and Torian Johnson receiving yellow cards. CBC put pressure on the Knights, and forced Dietrich into another big save. The knights had some chances late, but could not find the equalizer, and CBC picked up it’s 5th win this season.
There were many positives the Knights could take from this loss, but the biggest was probably Dietrich’s performance in goal. This is his very first season playing soccer at the high school level. He previously only played basketball, but decided to make the switch to soccer. You can read more about his story in the next edition of the North Star, on September 23.
The team’s next game will be on Thursday September 3 at home against Troy.
