FHN Students Found Club to Spread International Awareness

By Bree Williams

International Global Awareness club is a new club at FHN. The meetings are every other Tuesday after school in room 201. It was started by ESOL teacher, Anne Freeman, and junior, Chris St. Aubin to learn about world cultures, languages, and global events.

“Students should join this club because it is a good way for people to get into the international community,” St. Aubin said.  “And it’s a good starting point for anyone who wants to go into international affairs,”

During meetings, students discuss world news and give ideas for service projects. They also share events in club members’ cultures. The overall goal is to expand students knowledge of other cultures and also impact the world with projects

“I think it’s important that we know more about other countries because what’s happening in other countries does affect us in the United States and also this way we get to be more tolerant and accepting of other people’s backgrounds,” Freeman said.

One of the plans for global awareness club is to do service projects and help people outside of the United States. The club has no definite plans, but is trying to do food drives, hat days, and other small fundraisers to send money to other organizations.  The money will be sent out to people in need.

“Other students should care about global awareness because everything that goes on in the world affects everyone here in our school, so even if it won’t affect you directly it’ll affect you through many routes,” St. Aubin continued. “Your friend could be affected by it and that will affect you, or for example the China crisis. That affects the U.S. market and everything has an international reach these days. To be able to be globally aware will help everyone out in the end.”
