Varsity Cheerleading Serves as Backdrop on KSDK Newschannel 5

On Friday, Sept.25, the Varsity Cheer team was given the opportunity to cheer on a Friday night in a not-so-usual place. The girls on the team spent their Friday night not at a football game, but instead at a local news station while the reporters talked about high school games from that night. Squad members who attended left for the event around 9:45 p.m. in order to be there ready to go when the cameras rolled at 10:15.
“Cheering at the news station was a great way for my cheer team and the football team to be recognized,” senior Paige Ward said. “It was also an amazing bonding experience for my team and it’s fun to get out of our normal Friday night routine of cheering at a football game and get to experience something new.”
Larry Thornton, a news reporter at local NBC affiliate KSDK Newschannel 5 contacted the team about cheering on the show during the highlights because the team didn’t have a game to attend. Instead, the game was on the following Saturday were the Knights took on the Troy Trojans.
“It was something that you don’t get to do every day and a great experience to see everything that goes on there behind the scenes,” Senior Karley McCarthy said.
Before the team could go on stage and perform they had to get there early to learn about what they should do as the “backdrop” of the show. The girls had to talk with staff about what they were supposed to do during the show and how they should do it. They also had a little time before and after to take pictures and look around the building.
