Who won the Democratic Debate?
Published: October 14, 2015
Last night, the first Democratic Presidential Debate was aired live on CNN from Las Vegas. The debate featured the two presidential frontrunners of the Democratic party, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, while also featuring other candidates that needed to make a name for themselves, such as former Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee, former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and former Virginia Senator Jim Webb.
There was a lot to lose for those who were participating, with Clinton and Sanders risking their big leads, and Chafee, O’Malley and Webb put their entire campaigns on the line. After the debate, here’s who the winners and losers of last nights big event were.
Winners: Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders
The two biggest names certainly did well with their time to speak, gaining loud applauds all throughout the night. It’s almost not possible to decipher a true winner of this debate, with both Clinton and Sanders openly agreeing on some topics, and slightly disagreeing on others. Don’t expect much a difference in their poll numbers, but if one of them falls, the other will surely take the lead. Keep an eye on this matchup, it’ll get good after the polls come out.
Unclear: Martin O’Malley
O’Malley made his presence known, especially with his continued comments on his plans to make the U.S. a 100% clean energy country by 2050. But other than that, O’Malley was almost a non factor, aside from a small number of occasions. He may see a slight rise in the polls, but it won’t be much.
Loser: Jim Webb
At times, it seemed like Webb was more conservative than liberal, especially when it came to comments on gun control. But Webb really didn’t make his presence known in the short amount of time he had to speak, which will surely cost him in the polls.
Biggest Loser: Lincoln Chafee
Not only having a poor performance, Chafee also took heat for his past, as he held office as a Republican and an independent. He also admitted to not knowing what he was voting for while he was in his first term in the senate. He blamed this on the recent death of father and him just being thrown into the senate. This got a disappointed reaction from the crowd, as this will surely lead to him completely falling off.
