Car Talk: Three Reasons to Change Your Own Oil
Published: November 9, 2015
It’s a relatively easy job to do on your own, as well as an economical way to get your hands dirty and learn more about your own car. An oil change is one of the easiest regular maintenance jobs to perform on a car.
If you don’t already, here are three reasons why you should change your own oil:
- Instructions are readily available online. A quick Google search for your car’s make, model, and year should bring up multiple step-by-step instructions. In some cases, a Youtube video may even be available specific to your car. If all else fails, consult the owner’s manual.
- Instead of wasting time driving to a nearby maintenance shop and sitting in the waiting room for half an hour while you pay someone else to change your oil, save some time and do it yourself on your driveway.
- Oil changes typically cost $20 to $55, and using synthetic oil bumps it up to $45 to $70. However, a one-quart container of Mobil 1 Synthetic oil from Autozone costs less than $10. If you would like to read about how to choose the right oil for your car, click here.
So next time, rather than taking your car to get an oil change, consider doing it on your driveway at home. It’s easy. Just be sure to wear hand and eye protection to avoid getting oil all over your hands.
