German Club Students Sell Calendars
Published: December 16, 2015
With the holidays right around the corner, people are looking for fun little ways to celebrate and make them more interesting, both in and outside of school. German Club students have been selling Christmas calendars since 2002. German teacher Anne McPartland has been teaching at FHN since 2001 and has carried on this festive tradition ever since. They sold 60 calendars this year, and plan to continue selling them in the years to come.
“I like selling them because they are cute and it is fun to get chocolate every day leading up to Christmas,” senior Marygrace Cole said. “It gets the Christmas spirit going, and everyone likes chocolate.”
The calendars come in different shapes, sizes, colors and illustrations. They count down the days until Christmas, and each day holds a piece of chocolate. Club members see it as something to look forward to every day leading up to Christmas.
“The advent calendars are adorable, and it’s a tradition that the German Club does every year, and it’s just fun that they do it during the Christmas holiday,” art teacher Mandy Knight said. “Who doesn’t want a piece of chocolate every day leading up to Christmas?”
By selling the calendars every year, people learn a little more about the German culture and incorporate it into their holiday festivities while also supporting the German Club.
“It’s a mild fundraiser, and we don’t make a lot of money off of it, but it’s more about spreading the holiday cheer,” McPartland said. “We pick a name every day to open the next door. Everyone enjoys opening the little door and getting a little treat.”
