“Krampus” Movie Review

This year, Santa’s not coming for young Max and his dysfunctional family. Instead, they get a horrible surprise: Krampus. Krampus comes when you lose Christmas spirit and stop believing. After writing a letter to Santa, Max gets teased and picked on by his cousin for it, which throws him over the edge to stop believing. It went downhill from there for him and his family. First came the biggest snow storm they had ever seen. They quickly realized it was too dangerous to go outside, so they boarded up the windows and decided to stay inside. Krampus then started taking Max’s family members one by one, starting with his sister. She thought she would be safe to walk a few blocks to her boyfriend’s house, but she soon realized she was wrong. Once Krampus got his first victim, he didn’t stop until he took everyone.
This film was very different. It wasn’t a traditional horror movie, but more of a twisted, uneasy-feeling film. It wasn’t as consistent as it could have been; showing a gory creature eating kids one minute, then showing a cute child-like flashback to past Christmases another minute. That was another negative thing about this film: I feel like it didn’t know its target audience. There would be some kids humor in it but then a different gory creature would be eating a different kid and it leaves you wondering who they were trying to appeal to.
I thought the acting was okay, but they could have picked some better people for the roles. Not saying anything bad about Adam Scott or David Koechner, they just didn’t fit their roles in this film. If it was intended to be more of a comedy rather than a sometimes funny, twisted horror movie, they would have fit the roles very well. Overall I give this movie a 5/10.
