HOSA’s Annual Blood Drive Expects High Turn Out

Many Students and faculty members will be donating blood at FHN’s annual blood drive through the Missouri Valley Regional Blood Center on Friday, Jan. 28.

“I hope everyone who signs up to give blood is able to so we are successful and greatly contribute to hospitals nearby.” Blood Drive Committee Leader for HOSA, Abby Day said.

The blood drive will take place in the large gym from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the school day. Currently over 200 people have signed up to be a part of the donation. While many were on the waiting list to give blood, most of these people have been placed into time slots. HOSA sponsor, Matthew Riffe, has expected that of the 200 people who are willing to give blood, about 130 people will be able to have their blood used.

With the blood drive being hosted at a high school, many students will be giving blood for the first time. Riffee has many recommendations on what to do to prepare for giving blood.

“Eat a decent breakfast,” Riffee said. “Drink water throughout the day. It doesn’t hurt. Just do it.”

Day states that it is important to give blood as it can help many people in the community who need saving due to blood loss.

“If people didn’t give blood then anyone who needs blood for a medical procedure wouldn’t be able to receive it,” Day said. “It’s saving a life.”

HOSA has many other future events coming up including the Polar Plunge, the Random Act of Kindness Week and the Hygiene Drive.
