International Global Awareness Club Works to Help Foreign Students

The Global Awareness Club continues to try to make the school know of situations that are happening around the world and the hardships many of the citizens from poorer countries suffer through everyday. The club’s current mission is to help children in Uganda who struggle to receive education due to wealth of families and the society that they live in.
“As American’s, we are very fortunate to have education due for every gender and race,” International Global Awareness club member, Chris St. Aubin said. “In Uganda, only the oldest males in a family get this education because that’s all they can afford.”
To raise money for these children in Uganda, the club is currently reaching out to restaurants across the St. Charles and St. Peter’s area to work together to promote the cause. A portion of the profits that a restaurant receives from students or members of FHN will go to the Uganda project. While a restaurant has not been chosen yet, the club is looking towards Chick-Fil-A. They hope to continue several more projects throughout the year to help countries below the poverty line. Junior Bree Eimer believes it is important that we as a first world country should be helping countries that are less fortunate.
“It is important to help them because we want the world to be an overall better place and for it to keep developing, so using our resources that we don’t need to help them will eventually help us,” Eimer said.
The club is looking to expand and is always welcoming new members. Those who would like to join should find Anne Freeman who is the sponsor of the club. Every meeting is welcoming to those interested in participating.
“I think when we started the International Global Awareness club, we wanted everyone to be aware of the diversity in our school,” Freeman said. “Sometimes, especially in the Midwest, we are very isolated and think just of ourselves aware of that diversity and how the diversity in the world affects everyone and everything. If there is a problem in one country it is global. It will affect us to and we need to support and just be educated.”
