In the summer of 2017 german students have to opportunity to take a trip to Germany. This is the first time that students will be able to take a tour of Germany. Generally the german classes do an exchange program with St. Charles sister city, Ludwigsburg, but this year German teacher Anne McPartland decided to take a tour.

“Going to Germany can impact students by teaching the about new cultures and helping them learn about the way other people do things and they can put these things into their daily live,” sophomore Theresa Winkle said.

The trip is booked through Educational Tours, a company designed to teach students the German language while experiencing different things in Germany. While in Germany the group will spend four days in Munich, four days in the country’s capital Berlin and two days for travel. On the trip students will be visiting things like Neuschwanstein, the Berlin Wall and the Holocaust Memorial. Students will have have the chance to spend a night with locals and learn what it’s like to live in Germany.

“I remember being that 16 year old kid successfully ordering ice cream for the first time in German and being like, ‘Yes I know this,’” McPartland said.

McPartland like this tour because the focus is learning the German language while immersed in the German culture, so each day students will have a lesson and learn things they wouldn’t be able to learn inside the classroom.

“I feel like we learn a lot through our history classes and our language classes but to actually be there is a whole different experience,” McPartland said. “ I also think many times students wouldn’t have the opportunity to go without having adults to organize it, so I feel like that’s a way I can support my classes and students in general.”
