Cinco De Mayo is a day celebrated by the Mexican Culture to commemorate the country’s freedom. Brian Santos, also referred to as Sr. Santos by the students, is a Spanish teacher here at FHN. To celebrate this holiday and show appreciation to the culture, Santos threw a party for all his classes.
Students explained the different things they learned about the culture, while enjoying delicious treats during his sixth hour class.
“I love Mr. Santos,” Alana Simmons said. “He’s one of my favorite teachers here because he does fun stuff like this.”
Sr. Santos is the Spanish club sponsor, he advertises different events for the Spanish club throughout the year.
“Originally, we [the Spanish Club] were going to host an event for Cinco De Mayo, but unfortunately we couldn’t due to the lack of people,” Santos said. “Instead I decided to host fiestas in my classes.”
Although the Cinco De Mayo event didn’t turn out how planned for the Spanish club, Santos surely has a plan to how it will turn out next year.
“Definitely, I want to continue to do this next year, hopefully with the Spanish club and have everyone in the school to come,” Santos said. “To get everyone to show appreciation to the culture.”
Santos has a close relationship with his students, he wants to continue to doing different events to that involves the Hispanic culture, not just for the spanish club but in his class as well. For extra credit students of his brought in homemade pinatas.
“I want the students to see the cultural aspect of all of this, and to understand it.” Santos said.
