The Young Democrats and the Young Republicans are clubs available for students interested in politics. Recently, rumors have sparked that the Young Democrats will face off against the Young Republicans in a presidential-like debate. Some of the Young Republicans and Young Democrats have heard about the possibility of the debate.

“It would be an interesting debate because we’d get to see what people our age thought about politics,” a member of the Young Democrats club Jose Alega said. “I think the opinions of kids our age matters.”

Young Democrats has been active the past few years because of a core group of students who have continued it. However, the Young Republicans is being revived this year after about two years of inactivity. The club is a way for students to learn about the Democratic and Republican parties along with the beliefs of each party. The debate, if it happens, would have to be planned by both the Young Republicans and Young Democrats. Alega says they would have to find a legislature for the debate.

“I think it’s important to know what’s involved in a presidential debate, but I think it’d be a difficult debate,” junior James Warshing said.

The clubs have been going in depth on the 2016 election, being such a critical election with Trump and Hillary debating with such different views. The election is a big topic for both the Young Republicans and the Young Democrats. They also talk about state Senate and governor. The club can be informative to those wondering about the political parties.

“I think a lot of people are heated toward one of the presidential candidates,”  junior Amber Pryor said. “They’re both so different that it wouldn’t be a debate. It would end up being a big argument.”

Meetings for Young Democrats are held in room 145 at 6:55 a.m. every Wednesday morning. This could change at the end of this semester. Young Republicans meetings are held twice a month on Wednesday mornings at 6:50 a.m. in room 154.
