The varsity girls swim team will compete in a meet against St. Charles High School on Jan. 19. The meet will take place at the St. Peters Rec Plex and will start at 8:30 p.m.
“St. Charles has some incredibly talented swimmers, but I think we’ll do well at the meet,” head coach Karen Whitten said. “We’ve put together a strong line-up, so I’m excited to face them and cheer on our team.”
The swim team will have to get back into the swing of things because their last scheduled meet was canceled to due weather complications. At the last meet that they competed in, they defeated St. Charles West with a score of 119-46. The team placed very well, earning first and second in most of their events despite missing a few girls who were sick.
“The last meet we had was hard because we had a few of our key girls missing, but it was nice because I think we still performed well,” freshman Joanna Dohrman said. “I think we will be able to carry over our success well.”
As well as being a competitive test and challenge for the girls, this meet is also the team’s senior night. The team has three seniors: Rachel Arena, Anastasia Medley and Miranda Nevels. This will be their ninth meet of the season. The team has done well so far this season with two girls already qualifying for state, and they’re looking to finish their season well.
“Despite facing obstacles such as illnesses, injuries and insane weather, I think the team is performing very well this season,” Whitten said. “The girls work very hard in practice and it shows when the compete. They push themselves during practices and meets, and I think they’ll continue to do so and have a strong finish to a great season.”
