Varsity Boys Tennis to Compete in GAC Tournament

Last year’s boys tennis team won second place at the GAC tournament, finishing only 12.5 points behind first place, FHHS. One year later, the Knights are hoping to come in first at the tournament, held on April 26 and 27; only this year should provide the Knights with more of a challenge. The boys will head into the tournament at FHC with an overall record of 6-5 and they hope to do well against a couple of their more difficult opponents.

“We’re as prepared as we can be prepared,” senior Adam Quigley said.

All doubles matches at the tournament will be played on the April 26 and all singles matches will be played on the April 27, if the weather cooperates. The boys will need to prepare for some tough matches early in the tournament if they want to place at GAC’s. Considering FHN have no No. 1 seeds and will be playing tough teams like FHHS and FHC, the Knights have lost to both earlier in the season.

“There’s a different aspect about it [the GAC tournament] from a regular tournament,” sophomore Clay Boyd said. “You feel like there’s more on the line, but you also feel like your team has more pressure on you and are counting on you more.”

For some people, like Quigley, this could be their final match that they play in uniform for the Knights on the tennis court. Quigley hopes to place in, at least, the top three for singles at the tournament for his first varsity medal this year.

“As a first year player, having a positive record is something I am really proud of, but I would love to end this season with a medal.” Quigley said.
