With the season drawing to a close, the girls track team finishes the regular season with multiple team and individual winners.
At the St. Dominic Crusader Invite on April 7, the 4X400m relay team took first, which included sophomore Corinne Stevens. Junior Heidi Hauptman took first in the 1,600m run at the Parkway Central Henle Holmes meet. Many more athletes placed in the various meets throughout the season, which helped the team prepare for the postseason.
“I think that as a team we were focused on pushing each other to be the fastest and strongest we can be,” Stevens said. “We really came together this year.”
Most recently, the team came in sixth place at the GAC South Conference Championships at TBHS. Sophomore Claire Huss placed seventh in the 1,600m run and senior Breanna Wright placed second in the 100m hurdle dash as well as the 300m hurdle dash.
“I think I pushed myself a lot harder this year, and my performances were better,” Huss said. “I learned to push through the pain in races, and I think we all got better in some way.”
As well as running, the girls placed well in the field events. Senior Gianna Sulzner placed third in the high jump, and junior Marissa Hunt placed fifth in the triple jump. The team has high hopes for the District meet, which takes place May 13 at Parkway Central.
“I’m looking forward to participating in Districts and being the best I can because it is the end of the season,” Stevens said. “I really enjoyed this season because I think that we grew stronger as a team and there was definitely a more family aspect.”
