In 2016, the Lady Knights softball team went 15-8, having their best season since 2011. After such a successful year, expectations are always going to be high for the following season. These expectations are shared all the way from the players to the coaches, putting a degree of added pressure on the current team and their head coach Mike Freedline.

Freedline talks about the new season and finding even more ways to improve in 2017.

After a strong 2016 season, how do you hope to be even better this season?

We have made it to the State Quarterfinals the past two years and with 6 returning seniors we hope this will be the year we go to State.  Experience is the key.

What makes this team different from ones in the past?

Experience makes this team different.  In the past, we usually have 3 or 4 seniors and this year we have 8 seniors.

What are some of the biggest challenges this team will face this season?

One of the biggest challenges is staying consistent at the plate with everyone hitting up and down the lineup.

What are some of the team’s strongest aspects?

Our defense is our strongest asset.  We have some fast girls who can cover some ground quickly.

What is your goal for the team this season?

Our goal this season is to win Districts, Sectionals, Quarterfinals and go to State.

How did preparation for the upcoming season differ from the last few years?

This year with all of the experience we have it allowed us to focus on specific parts of our game.  They all know the program so well we didn’t have to cover the basics.

What are some of the games that you believe the team is most looking forward to this season?

Troy is always huge because they are really good again and won State last year.  They beat us in the Quarterfinals.  Francis Howell is also another good team who is tough to beat.

Who are some of the team’s leaders?

Some of the team’s leaders include Elizabeth Davis, Janae Watkins, Sahaura Pauley, and Skylar Ruiz.

As a coach, what are you most looking forward to in the new season?

Just being around this group of girls.  They are a lot of fun and tough competitors which make it exciting to play every day.

What do you hope your team will be able to gain by the end of the season?

Hopefully a winning season, but, most importantly, special moments that they will remember forever and friends for life.
