Varsity girls shine in one-sided matches

By Stacy Beasley

On September 13, girls varsity tennis played against Fort Zumwalt South high school. The girls JV, varsity silver, and varsity gold all played in this match. The team is currently at the height of the season and every match affects their placement in GACs. The team’s numbers were boosted from strong wins by players like Olivia Fetsch.

“I played doubles with Isabella, we won 8-1. All matches are difficult but if you communicate and strategize with your partner like me and bella did, you’ll have the advantage. We let our opponents make mistakes.” Fetsch said.

It was a cloudy afternoon with no wind and the girls had home court advantage. The numbers this match were exceptional, as the girls only lost one match. As for the season as a whole, the team hasn’t been as strong as in previous years.

“We’re doing okay this season, about 50-50 I’d say. We haven’t gotten as much practice as we need, and were not as organized as last year.” Audrey Dickherber said.

Doing well in this match also affected the girls GAC placement. The better they do in each match, the better their placement come GAC time.

“I feel like the winning factor was the practice we’ve been putting in. We split into groups and do drill training, just to get better and work on different elements of the game,” said Clayton Boyd, the team’s manager.

The girls have a busy schedule ahead, with three upcoming away games before returning home on September 22 to face off against Parkway Central.  According to Fetsch, however, the girls never stop enjoying themselves.

“We may look very serious on the court, but really we have a lot of fun,” Fetsch said. “The opponents are almost always nice, and the matches are a good time. Sure we haven’t been pulling every win, but we’re getting stronger and improving . Come GACs well be unstoppable.”
