On Oct. 5, 6 and 7, the auditorium doors will open, the stage will be illuminated and the backstage will be bustling with energy once again for the Drama Club’s annual fall performance. This year, the FHN Masque Players will put on A Piece of My Heart by Shirley Lauro. Unlike most years, this will be a serious piece with a suggestive, or minimal, set, as opposed to the usual comedic or dark shows set in a home interior.

“It is about the women who went over for the Vietnam War,” senior student director Bernadette Kornberger said. “It’s all about their experience and them coming back and trying to adjust.”

This year, the cast will be starring some new actors that have not performed on the FHN stage before. Freshmen Zoe Meier, Illakia Ranjani and Megan Miller all have lead roles in the show. One returning actress will be senior and Drama Club President Delaney Echelmeyer, who will be playing the lead role as one of the nurses who served in the war. The story will mostly focus on the women, so all the male actors will be playing minor roles.

“The cast are memorizing their lines well,” senior stage manager Bree Williams said. “They are on the stage the entire show, so that will be a challenge.”

The club began working on the show Sept. 5, holding auditions the week before. They plan to begin their tech week this Friday. Tech week is the week where students finalize all the parts necessary for the show and the crew finishes up any big projects. Drama teacher Kim Sulzner also plans to hold a special performance before opening night for Vietnam veterans.

“It dawned on me that students in this school had no reference on Vietnam,” Sulzner said. “This show provides that reference from a different perspective.”
