Fall 2017 Fashion Trends: A Prediction

By Isaiah Bryant and Taylor Sheridan

In the world of fashion, designers are always thinking a year ahead. By the time trends hit the mainstream, they are beyond over them. While most people get their style inspiration from social media, music videos, TV or magazines, it all starts in one place: the runway.

With the weather preparing to cool down, attention has moved from the bold hawaiian prints of summer ‘17 to revamped classic fall staples seen all over on the runway during the fall-winter 2017 fashion show season.

Every year, there is a stand out color that takes the stage and wiggles it’s way into any article of clothing it can. Last year it was yellow (which will still, undoubtedly, make an appearance), and this year it seems to be a bright burnt orange very fitting to the season. Outside of this, bright fall colors seem to have a grip on the seasons colors palettes in general. A change well received by designers after the dull Kanye inspired pastels reigned over the industry for a couple years.

The first trend seen from Gucci to Saint Laurent is corduroy. Yes corduroy, the material your dad wore all winter in middle school. At some point everything cycles back around. This fall classic is durable and warm and can be found at nearly any price point. Designers used this material in almost any color (though mostly in this fall’s most popular colors mentioned above) and and on any piece of clothing- jackets, pants, shirts and anything else you can think of.

The second material seen all over the runway is fur. Designers put fur on any jacket they could. Leather jacket, add fur. Bomber? Add fur. Fur coat? Still add fur. The fur usually was placed around the collars of the designer’s outerwear of choice.

The last trend seen all over the runway, unsurprisingly, isn’t new. It’s everyone’s favorite trend from summer: Hawaiian. Did you actually expect these to go away just because the warm weather is? Designers used the boxy, silky, wide collared shirts as a base for an entire exploration of prints and colors. These will definitely be carrying over into colder weather.

Keep in mind, these are just predictions based on the runway shows earlier this year. There is no telling what else will pop up based on the million other factors affecting the public’s opinion. For another opinion check out this video below.

The trends that are coming up in 2018, are already showing up in the fashion world today. Some of the trends that are being predicted as a full blown trend in 2018, are Futurism, Surf Gypsy, Colony and Electric. These trends in small ways are present today. Like metallic lipstick, bright white shoes and lots of denim.
