In honor of the recent Super Bowl, here is a list of sports related movies to watch after the big game with family and friends.
1.) Remember The Titans- When it comes to sports movies, this is the most common one that comes to mind. The film tells the true story of a new african-american coach who is in charge getting the first racially integrated high school football team to work together as a team. The film has a lot of heart, and with a eye-catching performance from Denzel Washington, it never loses momentum.
2.) Battle Of The Sexes- This a recent sports film about a famous feud between tennis players Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. It’s the true story of how their epic match came about during the women’s rights movement. Emma Stone and Steve Carell shine as the two titular tennis players, the script is exceptional, and it’s a unique sports story that people don’t see everyday. It deserves some of the Oscar nominations it’s been receiving.
3.) The Big Lebowski- Now this story isn’t necessarily about a sport, but it features one. The movie stars Jeff Bridges as “The Dude” who is mistaken for a billionaire with the same last name: Lebowski. When his wealthy counterpart’s rug is ruined he enlists the help of his bowling buddy to gain recompense for it. This movie definitely has a unique feel to it. The story is very out there, but the movie takes advantage of it which makes it very engaging.
4.) Stick it- This is a gymnastic themed movie about a troubled girl who is forced to return to her gymnastics life, and find rehabilitation. This is an extremely fun movie. From the gymnastic routines, to the music, to the characters, they all give the film such a sense of enjoyment. It’s not a work of art, but it’s definitely a fantastic film to watch with the family on a Saturday night.
5.) The Blind Side- Sandra Bullock stars as a mother who takes in an african-american teenager who is a homeless. Through her care the boy goes on a journey to become a successful football player. The story is amazing. It’s uplifting, emotional, and it never become too cheap or somber to watch. The film is extremely grounded, and the actors never fail to keep the audience awake.
6.) Rocky- This is one of the most iconic films that is on this list. “Rocky” is a film, starring Sylvester Stallone, about a small time boxer who gets the chance of a lifetime to face off against the heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. The film tells one of the greatest sports stories ever told. It’s exhilarating, electrifying, and the movie is the home to one of the greatest fight scenes in cinema history.
7.) The Sandlot- Another movie classic that tells the story of young boy who starts to hang out with a group of kids who like to play baseball for fun. They all go on an adventure to form an everlasting bond that will last in their hearts. This is a childhood classic that never get old. The characters are amazing, the humor is perfect, and the movie will forever hold a place in the hearts of the audience.
8.) Caddyshack- The film is comedy starring Bill Murray. The film is about a golf course where on a random day goofy, wacky things start happy out of nowhere. One of these include the capturing of a destructive dancing gopher. The humor is definitely the best thing about this movie. It needs to be since it’s a comedy. Murray gives one of his best performances ever, and the film is such a joy to watch.
9.) 42- “42” tells the famous story of Jackie Robinson. He is an african-american baseball player who is signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers, and has to face a dangerous amount of racism to become a successful player. Chadwick Boseman does a great job playing the iconic baseball player. The story is uplifting, full of emotion, and the film displays an accurate portrayal of the events taking place.
10.) Blades of Glory- This film is about two figure ice skaters, Chazz Michael Michaels and Jimmy MacElroy, who have to become the first male and male skating team in order to compete again after having a intense feud and being banned from the sport. This is one the most hilarious films ever made. Every actor from Jon Heder to Will Ferrell gives it their all in this movie.
