Sprinters Prepare for an Action Packed Season

With a new head coach, players, and workout regime. The boys and girls sprinters are gearing up for an electrifying season.
“I think the team itself is going to be more diligent when it comes to practice, I think that was our biggest issue last year, we had kids not show up to practice or not put effort into practice so we weren’t winning as a team, but I think if we knuckle down on that we’ll have a great season,” junior Kira Ward said.
With practices in full swing, the first meet will be on March 21. This will be a TRI meet against Francis Howell Central and Francis Howell. Coach Reed Lunsford has taken over as head coach and he gotten positive feedback from the runners.
“The dynamic of our practices are a lot different. I would say there more intense. Coach Reed definitely knows what he’s doing. He works us hard but he works us properly, and we’ve even incorporated the weight room into our workouts on Mondays and Fridays. So it’s totally different from previous seasons,” Ward said.
The runners practice everyday, Monday through Friday every week. With weight training mixed into their workouts the players hope to add size and strength to break through PRs and run down those times. The season runs through early May and depending on how the team does at GACs they could move on to districts , sectionals, and even state .
“I feel like we’ll definitely go farther than last season. We missed a lot of practice due to the weather but coach Reed does not make it as easy. He likes to make sure we get an intense workout every single day. I believe we’ll get plenty past GACs, we have a lot of young guys showing a lot of potential.” Josh Tanner said.
