Prom season. The time of year that makes most girls a little crazier, where Youtubers post new videos about prom and promposal pictures are everywhere. Just like every season’s fashion trends, this year’s prom dress fashion trends are different than last year’s. Two-pieces are still a desired in a prom dress; however, other trends have taken over as well. This years top trends for prom dresses are two-pieces, long sleeves, off the shoulder, floral print, sequins and deco beading.

Let’s start with the trend that most people are familiar with: two-pieces. Two-pieces hit the dress market big in 2015 and hasn’t hit a decline yet. If you were to walk into any store that sells formal dresses, you will see an abundance of two-piece dresses. Baltimore Magazine says, some fashion lovers say that one of the reasons that people are falling over for this trend is that the top or bottom can be reused separately based on the design of the dress and the outfit that is paired with the half of the dress. While I’m not to sure about reusing my beaded top to my dress with a causal outfit, two-piece dresses are a big trend that can really highlight girls natural shape and beauty.

The emergence of sleeves on formal dresses this year surprised me. It started with the cold shoulder trend that was everywhere this summer and fall. Taking it to the next level with full sleeves on prom dresses is something I didn’t expect, but I am here for it. Sleeves make any dress more formal and less typical for a high school dance which is everything senior who is ready for the world is looking for. Now, it’s not just long sleeves that are coming in hard; basically anything that is not sleeveless is in style this year. Sleeveless dresses are high maintenance, so this year, to follow along with boho comfy styles, people are saying bye to high maintenance and hello to easy to stay up dresses.

A trend that some people love, and some people hate: sequins. They can be done tastefully which is being shown this year by designers like Sherri Hill. These sequin dresses make girls feel like they are on the red carpet when they are walking into prom. What else is needed in a prom dress? My favorite design of sequins is deco beading. Deco beading is a play off of 1920s beaded art deco dresses. These deco dresses just scream classy and I love it.

As mentioned above the sleeved dresses came from cold shoulder shirts and tops. Along with cold shoulder tops off the shoulder tops came around big this summer. While summer is over, off the shoulder dresses, formal or not, are all over the stores. Some of the dresses feature a long sleeve off the shoulder top, and some are just a band around the arm that is connected to bodice of the dress. Depending on the design of the dress, it can become less or more formal or it could take away from the actual design of the dress. I’ve seen some where it just looks like a weird add onto a dress that was perfect before you added this fabric onto the arms. When used right, it can be a very on trend piece of a prom dress.

Lastly floral print, mainly roses, are everywhere but not just on dresses. I have more than a couple rose shirts in my closet. Back to the dresses though much like the rose trend for casual wear it is a great way to get some color and pattern on a basic dress. The print doesn’t have to be everywhere on the dress. My favorite is just some color up by the face to bring the attention up to it. However, it isn’t just roses; it is floral of any kind from all over the dresses and just a bit on the bodice or skirt of the dresses. Floral print is the best way to give some flavor to a dress.

With all these trends that are around, it could feel a bit hard to figure out what you want to wear on the important night. Keep in mind to stay true to your style and what you are comfortable in. If you like the sleeveless dress, go for it. Trends come and go, so who knows? You could also regret off the shoulder dress in years to come.
