Throughout the month of April, visitors at the Lillian Yahn gallery were in for a treat. AP Art students of FHN and FHHS displayed their work throughout the walls of the gallery. The artists have been hard at work throughout the year, preparing for this event.

“This event is meaningful to students because their work is professionally displayed in a public place where not only Francis Howell students see it, but people from around the area too,” AP Art teacher Amanda Knight said.

AP Art students are a sort of people with a similar interest, fine art. Their shared passion and artistic ability allows them to have opportunities, such as professionally displaying work. The primary focus for the artists is to express themselves through their creations.

“Being an AP Art student is a fantastic experience that allows students to learn and gather inspiration from so many talented artists,” senior Madeline Lamb said. “The students are very supportive and motivational towards each other.”

The students displayed an array of artwork ranging from many different types of mediums. Much thought went into the decision of what pieces to present. The presented pieces were the artists top two creations from within their portfolios, that hold 20, or more, projects.

“For the piece, “Serenity,” I used Coptic markers, high quality artist markers and ink lining pens,” junior Haley Peer said. “I chose this medium for the extra control of the pens and markers. Working with Coptic markers is very enjoyable, because after placing a color, you can blend it lighter, create soft shadowing and colors. The lining pens are great for getting a variation of line weights, which can draw the lookers eye to certain areas over others.”

To celebrate the success of the students, Knight hosted a reception. The reception was held at the gallery, during their closing night. Friends and family of the artists, along with staff members from throughout the district were invited to this ceremony. They enjoyed drinks and hors d’oeuvres, as they gazed upon the masterpieces that each student had created.

“This event is something I’ve done for the past four years now, it’s rewarding to see the student’s family supporting them, their creativity and artwork,” Knight said. “I am very proud of this group. They’ve worked very hard and are very efficient workers. Overall, it has been an amazing year.”

If you are interested in taking part in this opportunity, apply for AP Art in the upcoming school year. This course typically consists of upperclassmen who have taken Intro to Art, Drawing 1 and an additional art elective of choice. The application process will require a portfolio of 10 projects.
