Students and staff stand and hold their hands to their hearts while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Most students remember these words as it is part of their regular routine, but to some students it means so much more.

On Nov. 9, at 1 p.m, FHN will be hosting its second Veterans Day Assembly to honor those who have fought for our country. Students are encouraged to invite their military family members to enjoy this special day with FHN. During the assembly, there will be performances from KnightSound, the Knight Pride Wind Ensemble, along with multiple speakers.

“This assembly really brings more awareness that the veterans are there and that they made a really big sacrifice for our country,” said senior Gabby Reed, who currently has a brother in the military.

Many students and staff have a family member part of the service, including senior Essence Green and English teacher Dawn Jones. Green’s father has been a part of the Army for 21 years and is still currently serving.

“As his daughter, I did not like it [him fighting] because he is my dad, but I understand why and admire him for it,” Green said.

Jones’ father also served in the military. He was a part of the Air Force in the Intelligence Division for four years. Her father attended the FHN assembly last year and she had the opportunity to read a letter to the school that she wrote specifically for him. She loves the opportunity that the assembly gives to thank a heroic group of men and women who are typically unsung heroes.

The common theme between these three people: they enjoy this opportunity to thank and honor heroes who have fought for the country. All veterans are invited to attend the assembly which will be streamed live.
