FHN Learning Commons to Host Annual Coffee House in Februrary
Published: January 18, 2019
Every year at FHN, the Learning Commons hosts an event known as North Street Coffee House. Coffee House is a chance for the student body to come together during school hours and celebrate works of spoken word of literary merit. Students get to enjoy various works of music, poetry and literature, accompanied with fresh hot coffee and hot chocolate, cookies and live background art.
The 2019 Coffee House will take place on Feb. 13 and 14, starting during the first hour of the day, with acts changing between each day. Every hour, the Coffee House will cycle through various acts and perform in front of ELA classes.
“It is a celebration of written and spoken word,” Media Specialist Tara Willen said. “We usually try to have half musical and half literary performances to promote both kinds of entertainment.”
Any student who wanted to participate attended auditions yesterday, Jan. 17. Sign-ups were accepted until the end of the day on Jan. 16, with auditions taking place before and after school on Jan. 17. Students will find out if they are able to perform by the end of the day on Friday, Jan. 18. If an act is accepted, the performers will need to go talk with the Learning Commons staff for more information.
Senior Austin Shariff, performed with senior Essence Green last year in the song “Best Part” by Daniel Caesar. Shariff encouraged students with musical and literary talent to sign up to perform.
“I always like performing and trying to convey a message,” Shariff said. “It’s not just about the music, it’s about conveying a message and having fun.”
For the more artistic side of the FHN community, Coffee House needs a logo and challenges the students of FHN to create one. Every student who wishes to participate needs to have a logo turned into the Learning Commons by 2:30 p.m, on Jan. 18. The requirements for the logo are that it has to be in black and white and digital, and include the words ‘North Street Coffee House 2019.’ The winning logo will be selected by student vote, and will also become the Coffee House t-shirt design. Some of the top submissions will also get displayed to show all the hard work students put in, regardless of whether or not their design won. The winner will receive a $25 gift card of their choice.
