During the summer of 2018, McClay Library updated and redesigned their teen room for the local teens in the surrounding area. The new area was meant to be a fun and modern way for teens to come after school to study, finish school work and socialize with other peers.

“Our teenagers have different needs than our other community members that visit us,” Branch Manager Alison Griffith said. “Not to just be quiet and read, but to embrace the community, socialize and be in a safe place with their friends.

McClay Library also has a new group of teens on TAB, the Teen Advisory Board. TAB is a part of every branch and they meet at their local library once a month to discuss different clubs, events and activities for the community. All members are between eighth and twelfth grade, and can be in the club for as long or little as they wish.

“Teen advisory board is a group of teens who are involved in creating new ideas for the library, and have input in all of the decision making,” Griffith said. “They also participate in different community service activities outside of their club meetings.”

TAB is seen as an asset to the community, because it gives teens a way to voice their ideas and opinions. The club’s last community service project was helping and collecting Christmas toys to donate to Youth in Need.

“Wanting to create a fresh new environment for teens, the teen room allows teens to express themselves,” Griffith said. “They have the chance to do crafts, read, complete homework and socialize with friends.”
