Biology teacher Stephen Kelly has been working at FHN for thirty years. While working here, Kelly has begun an ongoing tradition with his students to wear a Hawaiian button down shirt every test and quiz day as an extra reminder for the students that forgot.

“My favorite part about this tradition is to watch the students reactions when they see the shirts,” Kelly said. “I think it’s pretty funny when someone forgets to study and they see me wearing the shirt and instantly realize that there is a test today. It never gets old.”

This tradition was started almost eight-years-ago, when a retired teacher started to wear Hawaiian shirts every single Monday which caused Kelly to adopt the tradition for himself and his students. Kelly is the only teacher at FHN to do a unique tradition like the Hawaiian shirts on test days and students like sophomore Caroline Mitchell notice.

“I do not know of any of my other teachers that have a fun tradition like his on their test days,” Mitchell said. “I feel like he is trying to make it more interesting and less stressful for us which is something that I really appreciate.”

Many students around school like Kelly’s Hawaiian shirt tradition, because it is a fun and unique way to interact with them. Freshman Zach Baker is in Kelly’s fifth hour biology class and has really enjoyed the tradition since the first day of the school year.

“I like his tradition, because it makes me happier when I enter his class,” Baker said. “Even though we have a test that day, it is something to look forward to seeing and still puts a smile on my face.”
