This morning, FHSD superintendent Mary Hendricks-Harris announced her retirement over email. She will step down as superintendent on June 30, 2020.

“It’s a difficult decision,” Hendricks-Harris said. “I’ve been going back and forth every day for a while now, but it is a decision I’ve thought a lot about. It’s going to be difficult to leave such an amazing district.”

She has served as superintendent for three years after beginning her tenure on July 1, 2016. In an email sent to parents and community members, Hendricks-Harris outlined how the district plans to move forward and what her goals are for the rest of the year.

Before stepping down, Hendricks-Harris would like to see a fully-funded plan for supporting the district’s facilities. She also hopes for continued support for the Strategic Plan after her departure.

“I want to make sure that it is fully funded, so it doesn’t walk out the door when I do,” Hendricks-Harris said.

No information regarding the search for her successor has been released as of today, however Hendricks-Harris hopes to see the spot filled by someone connected to the district.

“I’d like my successor to know how amazing FHSD is,” Hendricks-Harris said. “There is not a department that isn’t full of great people. Our kids and educators are all so amazing. I have truly loved my time in the district.”

Dear Francis Howell Community,

Last night during the closed session portion of the Board meeting, I asked the Board to accept my retirement effective June 30, 2020. During my tenure as superintendent of the Francis Howell School District Superintendent, I have had the privilege to work with a supportive Board of Education, a knowledgeable, student-centered administrative team, and a dedicated, collaborative group of teachers and staff. These caring professionals always make our students their top priority. It has been the highlight of my career to work in this community and with the amazing students and staff of Francis Howell.

In my remaining time as superintendent, we will continue to work together to move our District forward. I am very proud of what we have already accomplished under our new strategic plan and what we will continue to accomplish as a result of this work. I know we believe in our mission, which is “Empowering students to be lifelong learners prepared for the future.”

More information about the search for my replacement will be shared in the coming months. I know Francis Howell will continue to lead and excel well beyond my time in the District. Thank you for all of your support and the opportunity to lead FHSD for the past four years, it has been my great pleasure and honor.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mary Hendricks-Harris
Superintendent
