Kai Gustafson is a junior at FHN during the week, but spends Saturdays from 8 a.m to 1:30 p.m teaching 5-year-olds Japanese.
“It gives a whole new idea to school for me,” Gustafson said. “I have been going since I was 5 and I never got the teacher’s experience of it, and now I get to see the whole other side of schooling. So, I really like it.”
Gustafson teaches Japanese to kids whose families are here on work programs and send their kids to a Saturday school at Webster University so they do not lose their skills in Japanese. For him, it’s been a great experience.
“You get to see these kids that you have helped teach and see what you have done to help them grow right in front of you,” Gustafson said.
Kai also attended the same Saturday school as an elementary schooler.
“I have been going there since I was young, my mom is also a teacher there too,” Gustafson said. “It’s pretty common for a couple of high schoolers to stay after and volunteer and I really enjoy it.”
