On Oct. 11, at Northpoint High School, junior middle blocker Kennedy Jones set the record for total blocks in a single season, surpassing the previous record of 110, (set in 2006 by Nicole Hopp), by 12 more blocks (122).
This season, the Knights compiled a final record of 8-20-3, unfortunately being the 5th straight season the Knights have had a losing record. While the overall season may not look the best on paper, Jones’ broken record sure made a statement of how hard the team worked this year; however, Jones doesn’t plan to stop at a single broken record.
“Next season it gives me something to work towards,” Jones said. “I can break my own record and work to get better.”
Setting an athletic record is quite the feat of its own, but setting it as a junior makes the accomplishment that much more impressive. Looking towards next year’s season, the Knights will need to find a brand new defense and leader considering the Knights’ back row this season was made up of seniors.
“There will definitely need to be a lot of adjustments made,” senior defensive specialist Sara Ausbury said. “I think [Kennedy] will definitely be able to step up into more of a leadership position because she has always been quiet, but now she can lead her teammates.”
Jones is planning on continuing her volleyball career through her senior year and plans to put in a lot of work in the offseason to refine her technique. She hopes to continue setting the bar high for her teammates from an offensive and defensive standpoint.
“I hope the record motivates my teammates to lead and put in more effort,” Jones said.
