Sophomore Yocelyn Gonzalez had grown up with flowers being a want for many of her family members, friends, and community members, in a special way.  For many, flowers are seen as gifts for anniversaries, graduation, and funerals and can be used on special occasions like a token for a bride during her wedding. In addition, in the Hispanic community, it is a huge part of a girl’s Quinceanera alongside her dress.

“We started to make in the family if they wanted for birthdays,” Gonzalez said “And then people were interested and we started to make them for friends and comadres.”

Gonzalez had started working with her mother last year to make bouquets for family members. Her mother had started the business and as more people heard about the business her mother came to her to become more at the forefront of it all.

“it just makes me happy when I see people’s smiles and reactions when I give them their ramo. I feel happy when I am able to put a smile on someone’s face,” Maria Gonzalez, Yocelyn’s mom, said.

They’ve made various types of bouquets ranging from flowers as big as 300 roses to centerpiece flowers for events. She works with her customers to find something special for each person.

Gonzalez started to learn an economic side to this as her prices influx which has created a learning curve for her in what the proper selling point for the various types are. The new business has led to many new skills opening for her. She also looks to take to Instagram and Facebook, adding to the skills and roles she’ll have to manage.

“I see that it has helped her with being able to talk to people more easily,” Gonzalez said.

As she gets requests for her flowers she also balances well with her school work. She finds that being able to work by requests and denying or accepting them helps her balance school more as opposed to working a standard job with scheduled hours.

“I make them because I like flowers a lot and I think that it’s beautiful that people get flowers for the occasion that it may be,” Gonzalez said.
