The small but mighty FHN girls golf team is looking to make a statement this year. Last year the team consisted of nine girls with a JV and varsity team, but this year the team has 5 girls on the team. Assistant coach Matt Havermale was definitely a favorite last season, but as the school year progressed he decided to take the boys soccer coaching position.
“It is sad that he won’t be our coach this season since he was my coach for my first two years,” number two golfer junior Addy Brenner said. “Everyone loved Havermale and I know we will all miss him.”
In the off season many of the girls enjoy playing in many tournaments and practicing to get prepared. One of the tournaments played in the spring was a junior PGA tournament. The team gets to spend time together, give feedback and get better.
“In my off season, I take lessons from a coach I have had for a very long time,” Senior Alyssa Perkins said. “I also like to go out in my free time and play with friends or family so when it comes time for State all this work is going to pay off.”
During the first few weeks of the season, the team’s ritual is to prank the coaches. The girls usually eat dinner, then place hot dogs in the yard, silly string the house, hang banners of their faces around, and much more. Since the team is small, all the girls are really close and get to know each other well.
“Our team is really just like family and I’m looking forward to spending this season with them,” junior Olivia Graeser said.
