On Sep. 3, FHN students can audition for a role in the upcoming musical, “Grease”, which will be shown on Nov. 11, 12 and 13. The musical will be held in the new Knight Theatre auditorium under the direction of drama head Kim Sulzner. This year’s production will also be under the lead of senior Eve Oliver, FHN Masque Players’ President and senior Kat Burrows, Vice President.
“[Students] need a signed permission slip, and I do check grades,” Sulzner said. “I ask that they meet all of the MISHA standards. MISHA standards are low, and only require a 2.5 GPA.”
When auditioning, students are suggested to choose a monologue and show off skills that display their talents. They will first practice their rehearsed monologue, then sing a short section of a song that will showcase their vocal range. The audio of the song should be an instrumental version, and ready to play upon auditioning. There are multiple roles that can be fulfilled after passing the auditions, such as becoming a lead singer, or being in the ensemble.
“I think that anxiety when auditioning is normal,” junior Evie Hoffman, secretary of FHN Masque players said. “It’s okay to go in with a little bit of anxiety because it keeps you on your toes, but you should not go in fearing for your life.”
Additionally, the auditorium has a variety of new equipment for students to utilize. For example, students can learn and work in new spaces such as better designed dressing rooms, and a scene shop. Students can also participate in wood-shop work, where they can learn how to build platforms, handle power tools and use various saws and equipment. There are also many crews for make-up, lights, sound, props and costumes. Those who are interested in working behind the scenes can pick up a form in room 1024.
“Theater overlaps every single one of your skills from core classes,” Sulzner said. “It also teaches you life skills, because you will gain more confidence.”
