What grade are you in?
12th
What sports do you play, and how long have you been playing them?
Golf, I’ve been playing since 6th grade
What is your role on the team this season?
A varsity player
What kind of impact do you hope to make on the team?
To always help the team’s score, never hurt it
How have you been preparing for the upcoming season?
I play and go to the range when I can, although it’s been difficult lately because of the weather we’ve had
How do you balance academics with athletics, and what advice would you give to others?
At the end of the day, you have to put academics first. At this level of sports, succeeding in the classroom is far more important than in your sport. But the key is sacrificing time in other aspects of your life that aren’t as critical as what you’re doing during the season.
What are your personal goals for this season?
I’d like to win most of my matches as well as make it into first team all conference.
How do you feel about the team’s chemistry this year?
Our team has always been very close off the course. But some members have a tendency to be over-competitive when it comes to spots on the team. I think everyone needs to have the mindset that your performance is for the team, not yourself.
What’s your routine like on game day?
I wake up early and try to eat a good breakfast. On the bus to the course, I try to stay loose and laugh with team members. When it comes to golf, keeping a level head is the most important thing you can do. Overthinking your performance can affect this.
What have you been doing to stay in shape and improve your skills during the offseason?
I’ve really been trying to work on my short game and hit the gym frequently to increase my distances.
Are there any specific skills or aspects of your performance you’re focusing on improving this season?
My driver was my biggest flaw last season and it definitely cost me the most strokes. So I’m gonna try to dial that in this season.
Who has been your biggest inspiration or role model in sports?
My grandpa, he was an amazing golfer when he was younger and I really look up to him when it comes to practicing.
How do you handle the pressure or stressful situations during a game or meet?
I try to think about the big picture, what really matters. Because I should consider myself lucky to be able to play this sport and have as much fun as I do.
Do you have a pre-game ritual or any superstitions?
I have a ball marker that I use every round, and I’ll always use that one marker for the rest of my high school golf career.
What do you think you need to work on the most heading into the new season?
Definitely my driver.
Is there anyone on the team who has really stood out to you in terms of leadership or performance?
Bryce Renz is my best friend on the team and we certainly feed off each other’s energy on the course. When I’m feeling down he picks me back up and vice versa. And when we’re both lighting it up on the course, the energy is electric.
