What sports do you coach?
I coach freshman girls volleyball, and I coach varsity boys volleyball. I’m the assistant coach.
And what is your role or impact on these teams?
My role is to make sure that girls and boys know what they’re doing on the court, that they’re communicating with each other, that they’re improving their skills and that they’re having a good time out there playing volleyball.
What are some key stats that you want the boys team to reach this upcoming season?
I would really like us to get our serve received down, because that’s an issue with any team. I hope that it shouldn’t be an issue. We’ve got some great players that are coming in and some great players that are probably going to stay, and I’m excited to see where the season takes us. I think it’s going to be a little different from last year, just because all the players are so different, but they’re all, they all bring something awesome to the court.
What game are you most looking forward to this upcoming season?
Probably Central.
When is this game and where is it being played?
Well, we will play them twice, so one game will be at home and one game will beat Central.
What are the expectations from this game, and what are you expecting from the game?
I am expecting us to talk loud, communicate, and make big blocks, and I’m hoping that we have fun and we beat them.
What can you tell me about both teams When this matchup comes around?
We are high energy. We are in each other’s faces, pumping each other up, even the coaches get this way. And we’re like, we’re gonna do it. We’re gonna do it. Even on the bus. We’re playing pump up music. So it’s really even for the coaches, not just the students. I know the students have a rivalry, but even the coaches, I think, feel it too. We’re like, All right, we gotta get them.
What was the game like last time these two teams met?
For boys, it was different from what I’m used to. This was my first year last year, and it was different because a lot of the boys knew each other from, like, club season. So they’re like, Hey, man, they were talking to each other off the court before the game. We’re like, no, no, we don’t talk to them. They’re our opponents. We’re not talking to them. We have to get in the right headspace. So hopefully this year we can kind of continue that like, Hey, I know they’re your friend, but today they’re not.
What have the open gyms been like to prepare for this season?
We have had a lot of newcomers, which is awesome. If you’re interested in volleyball, I suggest you come out. You can find posters all around the walls, and you can come to room 1408, to find out when they are. But we’ve had a lot of new faces and a lot of people eager to just kind of learn the skills. And everyone is getting better each time they go. And I can see a lot of people being like, this is fun, which it is. It’s always fun. Sometimes the coaches get in there and just like, play with the boys too. So that’s always a good dynamic to have.
How would you describe a team goal for this year?
A team goal for this year would definitely be communication, and that goes for any team, not just ours, but I think communication is what helps a team win, win or lose games.
What is a personal goal for you as a coach this season?
A personal goal for me this season is to be more vocal on the court while the boys are playing and kind of just be there like, hey, if they have a question, they know what they’re doing wrong. And you know this too, because I coached you, but yeah, just be more vocal with the boys and let them know. Like, Hey, make sure you’re doing this. Or hey, next time that ball comes to you, do this footwork, so just be more vocal on and off the court for the boys.
What are the key differences from last year to this year with the team?
Key differences? Well, we did lose a lot of seniors last year, so we are kind of rebuilding a little bit, but the seniors this year were really looking for them to kind of take it up a notch and be the leaders for this team.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Come out and support us whenever you can. We love to have a big crowd for volleyball games.
