On Thursday, Jan. 23, the varsity girls basketball team took on Gateway Legacy Christian Academy at home and brought home another win, leading their record to 6-8. This was the Knights’ first time playing the Lions, leaving them hopeful, yet nervous.
“We didn’t really know what to expect of them because we had never played them, but we just went into it thinking, ‘we have to play our game and play hard no matter who the team is,’” Camille Krekeler, a senior who plays forward for the Knights said.
Even with their upbeat attitude, the Knights still started rough, with a two-point lead going to the Lions in the game’s first minutes. However, by the end of the first quarter, the Knights had a slight edge, leading 15-10.
“We were not all like ‘in the zone,’” Elise Grimshaw, a junior shooting guard for the Knights said. “We kind of saw them as one of our easier games, so we weren’t as mentally prepared. But once we realized that they were legit, we kind of locked in.”
The comeback wasn’t without its struggles. Grimshaw, along with other team members, had to gain a strong lead quickly if there was any chance to bring a win home. Quickly, Grimshaw became the team’s highest-scoring player of the night and by the end of the first half, the Knights led 27-17.
“She started off her game missing like a few three-pointers, but in the second half, she had a really big game, and she hit six three-pointers,” Krekeler said. “She was our highest scorer that night.”
Even though Grimshaw led the night, the game was a team effort.
“We had a lot of good rebounds, a lot of good put-backs, and I think everyone on our team pretty much scored, and so I think it was definitely a team effort, and that kind of contributed because it can’t always just be one person,” Grimshaw said.
The Knights ended the night defeating the Lions with a score of 71-48. The girls will be taking on North Point at home next Friday, Jan. 31.
