On Friday, Jan. 31, the girls’ varsity basketball team faced North Point at home for their senior night but fell short at the end of the night, losing 36-54.
“I think the peak of the game really was before halftime when we were up and we felt really good about the game,” senior team captain Addie Butler said.
The night had originally started off very strong for the Lady Knights with Butler and junior team captain Addy Jones scoring early points to help the team take a 10-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
“When the student section showed up, it made the team and I get more hyped than usual. So it was really cool to be encouraged by the whole school,” junior varsity player Lily Devine said. “It was also senior night so it was in some way a bittersweet night saying goodbye to the seniors and wishing them luck in their future journeys.”
The girls were able to keep a close lead on North Point right up until the end of the first half when North Point pulled ahead with 23 points and closed the half with North Point leading 23-29.
Despite late-game 3-pointers from Junior Courtney Epplin and Butler towards the end of the night, it was still not enough for the Lady Knights to overthrow North Point ending senior night 54-36.
“I wish we would’ve played better defense or maybe a different defense,” Butler said. “I think that’s the reason we lost.”
Although the score shifted quickly, it was still a memorable night for the seniors, as the crowd was filled with friends and family cheering them on in one of their final games and commemorating the four seniors on the team.
“[Reaching senior night] feels almost surreal and I still feel like I’m a freshman,” Butler said.
The Lady Knights will face rival Francis Howell Central on Feb. 4 and hope to learn from this loss.
“I will try and take more aggressiveness into the next game so I can box out the opposing team harder and get more rebounds,” Devine said.
