Last night, with the temperature dropping and the high probability of snow, FHSD followed many other districts in the area and called today, Feb. 12, another Alternative Methods of Instruction day.
“It would have been nice if it was an actual snow day, but I’m at home doing work, so I was happy to sleep in, but it would be better if I didn’t actually have to do math and chemistry,” junior Stefania Gentile said.
The winter storm “Iliana” has created hazardous conditions for much of the Midwest and Northeast. According to The Weather Channel, parts of Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa have seen three to six inches of snow. Although there was much worry over the amount of precipitation in store for the area, snow and sleet accumulations are only expected to add up to about one inch today. Even so, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory and many sources warn travelers to plan on slippery road conditions, as ice is expected due to the freezing temperatures.
“The road is melted, but the grass is snowy,” junior Camryn Portell said. “If my family didn’t have a truck, it would be hard to get around.”
In addition to grade schools in the area, Preschool, Vacation Station and all before and after school events for the district are cancelled today. Students have been instructed to complete AMI work given to them previously. To find all assigned AMI work, go to the district website.
“Most of my teachers do it as homework points, which I don’t mind doing, it’s not difficult,” Gentile said. “It’s some of the stuff that we’ve already been through, but it’s also some that we haven’t even learned yet.”
According to the district website, AMI can be used for up to 36 hours of lost or cancelled instructional time. The ability to use a fifth AMI day means the last day of school won’t be pushed back another day. Friday, May 30, will remain the last day of the school year unless additional snow days are needed, in which case AMI will not be used to make up for them. Any additional snow days will be made up starting Monday, June 2.
“I don’t know how they would do finals,” Portell said. “I am okay with [another snow day] if it’s safety related, but if there’s no reason to not go back, then I would not want that.”
