Going into the Super Bowl this year, there were many high expectations with the Kansas City Chiefs possibility of winning three Super Bowls back to back to back and with the rematch between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Chiefs from the prior Super Bowl two years ago.
“I thought for sure that if the Chiefs were losing the first half that they would get back up after halftime and win,” sophomore and Eagles fan Makayla Howell said. “Or I thought for a fact that both teams would have had the same score but then at the very last second, one of them would break the tie.”
The first quarter started the game off a little slow but relatively normal with the Eagles scoring a touchdown and an extra point, making the score for the first quarter 7-0 Eagles.
“I thought [during the first quarter], ‘oh God, not this again,’” chemistry teacher and Chiefs fan Shawn Farrar said. “It reminded me of when they [the Chiefs] played against the Bucks, three or four years ago, because I saw the same thing happening. So I kind of knew it was over by the end of the first quarter.”
The game started to ramp up during the second quarter with the Eagles scoring a field goal. Then the Eagles followed the field goal up with an interception resulting in a touchdown. And to finish off the fist half of the game they scored another touchdown, the score being 24-0 Eagles.
“Second quarter wasn’t any better than the first,” sophomore and Eagles fan Brandon Schnarre said. “I think the Chiefs still did worse. I think that they had a total of like 30 yards going into the second half.”
While both of the teams went to the locker room to prepare for the next half, Samuel Jackson appeared as Uncle Sam to welcome Kendrick Lamar to the stage for the halftime show. Lamar performed several of his popular songs including: “Squabble Up,” “All the Stars” and “Not Like Us”. He also performed with SZA and several others.
“I thought the halftime performance was good,” Howell said. “It obviously wasn’t the best one that there is, but it was really good. It was very symbolic for a lot of things, so I think you felt the symbolism and you’re a fan of that, it was good. I just think it should have been a little more hype, but I would say it was good.”
After the halftime performance the Chiefs and the Eagles retook the field. During the third quarter, the Eagles scored another field goal and a touchdown. After so much time, the Chiefs finally scored a touchdown and attempted a two point conversion but failed. With the Chiefs finally putting points on the board, the score was 34-6 Eagles by the end of the third quarter.
“Third quarter, they [the Chiefs] were kind of coming back,” Schnarre said. “But it’s hard to come back from being down by almost 40 points.”
The fourth quarter then followed with the Eagles scoring two field goals, widening the gap for the Chiefs to catch up. In an attempt to close this gap, the Chiefs scored two touchdowns both with successful two point conversions. In the end, the gap was too large for the Chiefs and the Eagles came out on top with the final score for the game being 40-22 Eagles.
“It [the fourth quarter] was just garbage,” Farrar said. “As an actual football fan, I saw what was happening. Because, once I get into something, I really get into it and I knew it was gonna be. And at the end of the first quarter I was like, ‘yep they lost, this sucks.’”
