Lots of people at FHN like to draw, and people take art classes to practice that skill. In the basement floor of the school, the art hallways are decorated with students’ artworks on the walls and in display cases, showing what students taking art classes have made. Student’s styles are different and unique to each person. Freshman Matthew Villar is someone with an interesting art style, with exaggerated and disproportional features.
“In middle school, my friend Ashton taught me how to draw like I do today,” Villar said.
With a more realistic approach, freshman Juliana De Los Reyes has recently found a style she likes. With a mix of traditional and digital art, she likes to draw semi-realism and a cartoonish style. Reyes hopes her art will go beyond her teenage years. Reyes is going to paint a mural in St. Louis, and wants to continue drawing and making art after school.
“I was drawing consistently, constantly getting good and improving,” Reyes said. “If I go on digital, I flip the canvas to make sure my proportions are correct.”
FHN offers different art classes to take, letting students experiment with new mediums, learn new techniques and find their styles while also getting their art credit. Some of the projects get hung up or set up in the display cases around the hallways for others to see, and it’s a great feeling for students to see a project they made in the hallway. Art teacher Kim Skwira teaches a few of the different art classes, including intro to art, painting, and sometimes drawing classes. Students with different styles are encouraged to show them off while taking an art class.
“I try to tailor the assignments so that students can be true to themselves and include their style,” Skwira said.
