For a lot of team sports, chemistry is needed to be successful. In high school athletics, this applies even more because most are not playing together outside of the school gym. For varsity boys volleyball players Alex Williams and Josh Windsor, they get the privilege of playing volleyball together outside of just high school and transfer that connection into a new kind of environment.
“We work really well together on the serve receive,” Williams said. “It’s very dependent in being comfortable with the person next to you, listening to them, which me and Josh have gotten very good at.”
Williams and Windsor have been on the varsity roster at FHN for three years. They have also played club volleyball together for two years at Momentum. Working well together has been something the two boys share in common. Williams, being the libero for the Knights, allows for Windsor to set up for many kills and attacks, which the two have done many times.
“My most memorable memory was when I realized how well we were starting to play together,” Windsor said. “We didn’t need to talk as much and added onto that we were getting mostly every ball up.”
Their experience at Momentum has played a key role in not only their development as a duo on the court, but their individual development as well.
“Playing club makes me reach for higher goals,” Williams said. “I get to see what I can do and what I need to work on.”
Williams, during the 23-24 season, accounted for 31 assists and Windsor had a total of 156 kills. As the Knights look to grow and build on last year’s 16-17 record, the boys become key players in their attack. Williams, as a main starting libero, and Windsor, as a starting outside hitter, are a strong power duo that many teams wish to have, not only on the court in high school but outside of it on the club level as well.
“Having two out of the six players on the court already familiar with each other definitely boosts the team chemistry,” junior setter Luke Hollinger said. “It helps build the foundation for how we want our team to be this season.”
