With the old building gone and the space leveled out, the only question left is of new construction. With setbacks like weather, funding and general construction problems, the original timeline of what will replace the old building has been pushed back by quite a lot. However, construction has started, and soon the space will be filled.
“If you see Mr. Fletcher, he’s still running around,” principal Monica Perry said. “There’s still some last minute things that they’re still working on, patching up, building.”
With the replacement of the old building comes new and exciting things. The visitor bleachers for the football field will hopefully be put in before the end of the school year, and new practice fields will fill the empty space. The fields will be used for sports like track and field events: triple jump, shot put and javelin.
“I think we’ll be able to use the guest bleachers by spring,” head principal Jefferey Fletcher said. “And then, once they plant all the grass, we’ll probably have to stay off of that grass so it can root and take hold by fall.”
The official time for the fields to be done and ready for use is estimated to be by the beginning of the 25- 26 school year. With the ongoing construction and preparation, being on the field too early raises risks of ruining the freshly planted grass. And with there already being previous setbacks, that’s not a risk they’re willing to take.
“I think it’ll be great,” Perry said. “Just some cosmetic things that didn’t get the chance to be done, that we’re still trying to get done.”
Watching the old building being torn down, students and faculty reminisce on memories and events they remember from their time there. From the walkout, the two-story lunchroom and the courtyards unique to the school, the old building will be missed by many.
“There were some unique features about the old building that I hadn’t really seen anywhere else,” Fletcher said. “There was a lot of murals that were on the walls that were painted from former students. That was a pretty cool feature.”
