For the first time since it started, pole vaulting is finally able to practice at their home field after getting new mats. Adjusting to them has brought some challenges.
“It was a little hard to set up, and it’s gonna be a little harder to put the standards in, but I like that we have equipment,” junior Rebecca McGuire said.
The question is whether it is necessary to get new mats or not. The old mats were getting dry-rotted and gross, so it was clearly time for a change.
“I do [think it was necessary], because the old stuff that we had was just very out of date, and it was just run down,” senior Delaney St. John said.
People may not think this affects pole vaulters, but it does. It helps them because they don’t have to go to Central every day for practice, which took time and had caused transportation issues.
“It’s made practice a lot easier because we’re all in the same spot now,” St. John said. “So, if we don’t have one coach there, it’s nice because we have all the other coaches around us, and we don’t have them at different schools.”
